A Different Type of Selection Sunday

When you hear “Selection Sunday”, most people immediately think of the day the teams are chose for March Madness – the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. However, I had a different type of Selection Sunday – actually two different types with one of them being points/miles/travel related. Let me explain.

I’ll start with the more relevant example for the readers of this blog. It was application day for my wife which means I apply for several credit cards on her behalf (with her permission of course). The big decisions involved which cards I was going to select to apply for on her behalf. As a rule of thumb, I tend to focus on earning points/miles in transferable programs though I will gladly take advantage of an increased offer for the right airline or hotel credit card. In the end, here is what made the final cut:

  1. American Express Starwood Business Card – 35,000 SPG Points for spending $5k in 3 months
  2. Chase Ink Plus – 60,000 Chase UR Points for spending $5k in 3 months
  3. Bank of America Alaska Airlines Credit Card (w/ $100 Statement Credit) – 25,000 Alaska miles upon account approval. The $100 statement credit is earned for spending $1,000 in 3 months.
  4. Bank of America Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card – 25,000 Alaska miles upon first purchase.

Unsurprisingly all four are pending and I am planning for my wife to not call reconsideration on any with the possible exception of the BofA cards after a week or so. We’ll see what the next week brings and I’ll report back with the final results as well as my thinking behind each card.

I’ll end this post the more important selection I had to make on Sunday though it has absolutely no bearing on the points/miles world.  You see my wife and I are expecting this July and we hosted a gender reveal party yesterday with some close family/friends. The big decision was each guest had to choose a color to wear based on whether you thought it was a girl or boy. Since we didn’t know ourselves, I chose a nice pink polo while my wife opted for blue. I’ll let the pictures speak for the final result….

This was a little different than what most people think of “Selection Sunday” but I wouldn’t change anything about it (well maybe some instant approvals would be nice). Even if we go 0 for 4 on the applications, I had at least one win on Sunday.

Free Giveaway: Two American Airlines Admirals Club Passes Expiring April 15th

Update: Jeff Pierre is the winner! He has already responded to claim the prize. Thanks to all that entered!

A kind reader of mine (Christian) commented on a recent post that he was looking to get rid of a couple expiring AA Admirals Club passes and I offered to help by having a giveaway on the blog.

AA Passes

It is quite simple to enter the drawing for these free passes – simply leave a comment on this post telling me what airport you would use these passes at.

Since these passes expire in a month please only enter if you know you can use them by 4/15. I will select the winner, using a random number generator, on Tuesday night (3/15) at 9pm EST and put you in touch via email with Christian so he can mail you the passes. Based on when they are mailed, you will have a little less than 4 weeks to use the passes.

Good luck!

Chase Freedom Unlimited Will Be Available Starting March 13th

Update: Read my post on the conversion process – I learned a few new things while doing this

Several weeks ago we found out that Chase would be offering a new credit card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited, which has the potential to be one of the best no annual fee credit cards out there. This card will earn 1.5 Chase Ultimate Rewards per dollar spent and if you (or a household member) have a Sapphire Preferred or Ink Bold/Plus card, you can then effectively transfer the rewards earned on the Freedom Unlimited card to airline and hotel partners. Earning 1.5 UR points on a no annual fee card is quite strong – in fact it is better for non-bonus spend then the Sapphire or Ink Cards, both of which have annual fees of $95.

My wife has a normal Sapphire card (not Preferred) from several years ago when she product changed from the Sapphire Preferred to the no annual fee Sapphire card. I wanted to do another product change and convert that card into the new Freedom Unlimited card since it is a much stronger card and still carries no annual fee. I secured messaged Chase online (on behalf of my wife) and asked if she could product change into this new Freedom Unlimited card. While she was told she could not yet, the representative spilt the beans that the card would be available on March 13th.

This is also consistent with what others are hearing, such as this exchange on Twitter started by Doctor of Credit’s tweet. It is noted that the card will be available in just Chase branches and by phone. The only semi-strange part of the representative’s response was that it would be available between March 13, 2016 and April 7, 2016.

I’m not quite sure why there is an end date even listed so maybe there is some chance this representative is misinformed but I feel rather confident (though not 100%) that the card will be released on March 13th. It does seem that the card will not be available online at first and for that timing, I’ve heard early April (maybe April 8th if the representative was referring to the time period above when the card is solely available via a branch or phone). I’ll be sure to detail my experience attempting a product change if the card is available on March 13th.

Has anyone else heard anything about a March 13th release date?

PSA: For New eBay Accounts, Remember to Enroll in eBay Bucks!

If you’ve been following me on Twitter for the past month, I’ve tweeted several times when there has been a new bonus eBay Bucks offer. My personal eBay account has luckily been targeted for almost every bonus eBay Bucks since sometime last year and I figured it was time for my wife to open her own eBay account so I can begin doubling up on reselling deals, especially during these bonus bucks offer.

I opened her account towards the end of 2015 and made a few purchases before the end of the year to earn some Q4 eBay Bucks…or so I thought. While my wife had not been targeted for any eBay Bucks offer, she should still have been earning the base eBay Bucks on most transactions which is 2%. However, I completely forgot one very important step – you actually need to enroll in eBay Bucks!

eBay Bucks Signup

This might strike some of you as obvious but it wasn’t for me as I (stupidly) assumed all new eBay accounts would be automatically enrolled in eBay Bucks. It never clicked for me that when I purchasing gift cards or other items under her account, it never showed any eBay Bucks earnings when I was checking out – I just assumed I’d receive them when the quarter ended and that eBay was just not showing it on the checkout screen for whatever reason. This also explained why my wife had no luck getting targeted for any bonus offers – you kinda need to be enrolled first to be elgibile for bonus offers. Doh!

Doh

So for any new eBay users or anyone setting up a new account for a friend/family member, please go to this link after opening the eBay account and signup for eBay Bucks. And once you are signed up, consult this handy reference from Doctor of Credit and be sure to read the comments as well on how to get targeted for bonus eBay Bucks offers which seem to be occurring on a weekly basis recently.
