How I Helped a Friend Save 6,400 Miles By Using Miles More Efficiently

As I’ve discussed previously in my Points & Miles 101 series, there are several different types of points & miles and not all points & miles are created equally. The general consensus was that flexible points (like Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards etc.) are the most valuable due to the many different ways they could be redeemed. The following example below shows how American Express Membership Rewards points can be quite useful but you need to use them the right way to get the most value out of them.

Last week a friend of mine was trying to book roundtrip tickets from NYC to Boston and was ready to spend either $154 or 15,400 American Express Membership Rewards points if she redeemed them through Amex Travel. Thankfully she talked to me first because generally redeeming points at 1 mile for $.01 cost ratio (a $500 flight cost 50,000 points for example) through Amex Travel is NOT a good way to spend your hard-earned points. The great value of flexible miles or points lies within the ability to transfer these points to different airlines or hotels. By knowing which airline partner to transfer the points to, you will usually save miles compared to using them via Amex Travel. In this scenario here, the best option for my friend was to transfer her points to her British Airways Avios account.

You might be thinking why the heck would she transfer points to British Airways when all she wants to do is fly a simple US domestic flight!? The first reason is British Airways is a one world alliance partner with American Airlines and US Airways who both fly routes from NY to Boston and you can redeem British Airways miles for flights on their partners, like AA or US Airways. The second reason has to do the with the British Airways award chart which is based on the actual distance of the flight flown instead of a fixed amount like most other programs. As you can see in the chart below, flights under 650 miles are only 4,500 miles each way or 9,000 miles roundtrip! American Airlines, Delta, United and US Airways (the legacy carriers) would all charge 20,000 or 25,000 miles roundtrip for the same NYC to Boston flight. What a rip-off!

Once my friend told me about her plans, I knew British Airways Avios was the right type of miles for this trip as LGA to BOS was only 184 miles in distance but she didn’t even have any Avios nor did she even have an Avios account setup (she must have missed this post where I advised to signup for all airline and hotel loyalty accounts). However, she did have a healthy balance of Amex Membership Points and they transfer instantly to British Airways Avios. She set up a British Airways account and once she confirmed there was availability for the flights she wanted, I instructed her to transfer the 9,000 Amex MR points to her Avios account and ten minutes later, her flights was booked. For a weekend in Boston she spent 9,000 miles and $11.20 in taxes.

With US Airways flying the hourly shuttle between LGA and BOS, there was a ton of availability and she had the pick of the litter when it came to flight times. Her value per mile was 1.7 cents ($154 cost of flight if paid cash /9,000 miles used), so much better than redeeming for 1 cent via Amex Travel like she almost did. For a domestic redemption that was quite good value and one that everyone should keep in mind for shorter, direct flights.

Point & Center: Another Free 1,000 Air Berlin Miles, New Centurion Lounge at LGA and More Free Miles!

It’s been a bit of a slow week in the points and mile world but let’s recap what you might have missed.

1) Another Free 1,000 Air Berlin Miles – I posted a similar deal a few weeks ago on how to get a 1,000 Air Berlin miles for free via their partnership with Sixt. This time a duty free store called Heinemann is offering 1,000 miles if you register for a Heinemann account online. Do I know anything about Heinemann? Nope but I’m not going to let that stop me from 1,000 free miles. Remember to use an email address you don’t care about to signup for this account.

2) New American Express Centurion Lounge at LaGuardia Airport – American Express is in the process of opening several lounges around the US that offer higher end food, beverages and massage services while you wait for your next flight. The lounges in Dallas and Las Vegas are currently open but View From the Wing broke the news that the LaGuardia lounge will be opening in the next week. He has several pictures of the lounge and the menu, which looks quite tasty. Access is complimentary if you are a Amex Platinum card holder. The one downside I see is that the lounge is landside which means you will need to budget some extra time to go through security.

3) Free 100 Airlines Miles from Baltimore Airport (BWI)- Via Doctor of Credit, if you signup for a free BWI rewards account, they will give you 100 airlines miles in the program of your choice! You can choose from American, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Delta among others. You could also receive 200 hotel points but the programs listed (Hilton, Wyndham and VOILA) don’t make it worthwhile for me to choose this option. Here is a direct link to this offer.

4) American Express Sync Deal for $5 off $25+ Purchase at Bed, Bath & Beyond – If you are an American Express cardholder, you are eligible for certain promotions and deals Amex offers under the “Amex Offers For You” tab in your account. This month one of their feature offers is $5 off a Bed, Bath & Beyond purchase of $25 or more. Now you might be thinking you have no need to shop at BBB but they sell gift cards to other stores including Starbucks, Subway, iTunes and a bunch others. I have 4 Amex cards myself so I can save $20 bucks on my next caffeine pit stop at Starbucks.

$30 Off Uber Rides + Double Points on Uber with American Express

I’m just getting back into the swing of things after our Alaskan vacation (which was awesome, check out the ice cave at the end of the post) so I have two quick tidbits related to Uber that I missed while I was away.

1) $30 Off Your First Uber Ride – I’ve posted about Uber credits before so I’ll make this quick – Uber has temporarily increased the signup bonus to $30 off your first ride when referred by an existing user. My link is below if you still haven’t signed up and feel free to leave your own referral link in the comments (disclaimer: the referrer will receive $30 in credits as well)

2) Double Membership Rewards Points on Uber Rides with American Express – Amex has partnered with Uber to offer 2x Membership Rewards points instead of the standard 1x points when you link an eligible American Express card to your Uber account and pay for the ride using that card. Eligible Amex cards include the Platinum, Gold Rewards, Everyday, Everyday Preferred, Green among others.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred card, I would still use that for Uber rides as you will earn 2.14 points (2x points on all travel + annual dividend). But if you don’t have one, this new partnership between Uber and Amex could be a nice benefit for you.

I use Uber quite frequently from JFK or LGA to home after our trips and it is always cheaper for us. A traditional car service is between $70-$75 to Mineola but my last Uber ride from JFK was only $52 and has never been more than $66. When factoring in the convenience of it as well, it’s a no-brainer to me.

Free Boingo WiFi Plan for American Express Platinum Cardholders

There are two new benefits for American Express Platinum cardholders and one of them could be quite valuable depending on your travel habits.

American Express has partnered with Boingo to offer an unlimited global WiFi plan for up to 4 devices at a time when you link your American Express Platinum card to a new Boingo account.  Boingo offers a similar WiFi plan for up to 4 devices, capped at 2,000 minutes a month, for $59 per month but this partnership with American Express is actually better as it is unlimited global wifi. This could really come in handy in foreign cities and airport where you don’t want to use your data plan on your smartphone or tablet. I wouldn’t pay $59 a month for this privilege but as a free perk its absolutely worth signing up for.

The signup link is here at https://amex.boingo.com/

The plan touts over 1 million WiFi hot spots and taking a look at their coverage (here or through the Boingo Wi-Finder app) it does seem quite extensive.

Additionally, there is another new perk for Platinum card holders though it is duplicated by another current perk. American Express announced cardholders can get TSA PreCheck for free if they pay the application fee ($85) with their Platinum card. While that is great and all, you are much better off signing up for Global Entry as it is free for cardholders if  paying the application fee ($100) with your Platinum card. Global Entry includes expedited entry back to US from international trips (goodbye customs line) AND includes TSA PreCheck.

In short, I don’t know why anyone would just signup for TSA PreCheck when Global Entry offers the same perk plus expedited customs entry which is a HUGE time saver. But in the event you only want TSA PreCheck at least Amex gives their customers that option.
