  2. Please take a note from the Citibank website below as fees change starting Jan 1 2015.
“For the Citigold package, effective January 1, 2015, credit cards, mortgages and other loans and lines of credit will no longer contribute towards the combined average monthly balance required to waive fees, including monthly service fees, and the $250,000 tier to waive monthly service fees will be discontinued. For the Citibank Account package, effective January 1, 2015 credit cards, mortgages and other loans and lines of credit will no longer contribute towards the combined average monthly balance required to waive the monthly service fees and Non-Citibank ATM fees. Also the combined average monthly balance to waive the monthly service fee and Non-Citibank ATM fee will be decreased to $10,000. Effective with your statement period that begins on or after January 1, 2015, the monthly service fee will increase to $25. For the Basic Account package, effective with your statement period that begins on or after December 17, 2014, the monthly service fee will increase to $12.”

  3. Even worse, when you open a Citibank Checking account and get miles they will give you a 1099 valuing the miles at 2.5 cents each. So, you will basically lose money if you do this deal.

I can say last year Citi issued a 1099 on TY redemptions accrued from my checking account. After a lot of fighting, they ultimately gave me a credit for the additional tax hit for the 1099 to one of my credit cards, but were adamant that those types of redemptions are subject to 1099s if you receive a value over $625 (I think). The infuriating part of the process was that there was no set rule on how they valued the redemptions or a way to challenge their valuation if someone thought that they were high. I’ve steered clear of checking account deals with Citi since. Credit card accrued points are fine.

  5. Two questions – I read the T&C for the offer, but couldn’t tell if I am excluded from this offer if I took advantage of it last time around. also, I see it is targeted at AAdvantage cardmembers, but do I need to receive the email offer to participate?

    • To the first point, the restriction I see mentioned is if you are a current Citibank checking customer. If so, then you are not eligible. For not receiving the communication directly, I do agree it appears that it is targeted but I tried signing up my wife who didn’t get this promotion and the code was accepted. However, that could be a case where YMMV.
